*Art therapists are trained to offer both traditional verbal psychotherapy, and/or art psychotherapy as desired by the client.
Art therapy is a means of self expression for people to use to gain insight into their lives and personalities. Artistic skill or talent is not in any way a requirement or benefit to this approach. Art therapists serve as primary or adjunct therapists in any mental health setting and with any age group or population.
An art therapist does not analyze artwork for the patient. The relationship between patient and therapist is one that supports the patient's interpretation of his or own her images or symbols, which allows the patient to discover his/her own meaning and insight through their work.
The artwork tells the story, the patient is the storyteller and the therapist guides the patient, often mirroring accuracies and/or distortions that the patient may encounter about him/herself.
Adults can rationalize and intellectualize their way around uncomfortable emotions and delay resolution. Art therapy can offer a supportive, direct, and tangible form of expression and identification of emotion which can promote resolution of the problem, and increase insight into maladaptive behaviors.
